Description

This unit provides a comprehensive understanding of the differences between outpatient and inpatient billing workflows, documentation requirements, and reimbursement processes. Learners will explore how patient status determination, coding, and claims submission differ across these settings, and how each impacts organizational revenue. Emphasis is placed on recognizing documentation standards, billing form variations (CMS-1500 vs. UB-04), and payer-specific rules for each care type. Students will analyze case scenarios to identify reimbursement differences, apply billing rules, and design workflow maps illustrating the billing lifecycle in both contexts. By the end of this unit, learners will have the competencies to accurately apply billing requirements, support compliance, and optimize reimbursement for both inpatient and outpatient encounters.
