Define policy advocacy and its goals Identify advocacy stakeholders Construct a stakeholder influence map Write a policy advocacy brief Analyze existing advocacy campaigns Develop a communications strategy Propose a new advocacy initiative
After completing this course, learners will be able to articulate the purpose and ethical foundations of policy advocacy while identifying diverse stakeholders whose engagement is critical to policy change. Learners will develop practical skills to map stakeholder influence, write persuasive policy briefs, and design comprehensive communications strategies that effectively reach and mobilize target audiences. Learners will analyze existing advocacy campaigns to extract lessons about what drives policy success, and they will be equipped to propose new advocacy initiatives that are evidence-based, stakeholder-inclusive, and aligned with national and international health priorities to address healthcare challenges.
While not required, learners will benefit from foundational knowledge of healthcare systems, basic understanding of health policy processes, and familiarity with public health principles. Prior experience working in healthcare settings, exposure to advocacy work, or involvement in policy discussions would enhance contextual understanding. Learners without this background can still succeed, as the course explains advocacy concepts and policy processes from foundational principles and provides practical examples throughout.
