This Course examines the ethical and regulatory frameworks that guide the development, implementation, and use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies in healthcare. Learners will explore the moral, legal, and social implications of applying NLP to sensitive patient data and clinical decision support systems. The unit addresses key ethical challenges such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, informed consent, transparency, and accountability, alongside legal standards including HIPAA, GDPR, FDA guidance, and the 21st Century Cures Act. Through case studies and applied discussions, learners will develop strategies to ensure that NLP systems comply with healthcare regulations, respect patient autonomy, and promote equitable, safe, and trustworthy AI-driven healthcare.
Ethical principles and legal frameworks governing healthcare NLP applications. Significance of data protection laws such as HIPAA, GDPR, and the 21st Century Cures Act in regulating NLP technologies.
