This course explores systematic approaches to evaluating population health initiatives, examining how to measure program effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability. Learners distinguish between process evaluation, which assesses implementation fidelity, and outcome evaluation, which measures health impact. The course emphasizes identifying meaningful indicators, applying evaluation tools such as surveys and dashboards, analyzing performance data using basic statistical methods, and communicating findings to stakeholders. Content addresses real-world complexity including resource limitations, ethical considerations, and the importance of stakeholder engagement in evaluation processes.
Describe the difference between process and outcome evaluation Identify useful indicators for assessing program performance Apply evaluation tools to assess real-world initiatives Analyze performance data using basic methods Evaluate the effectiveness of a population health program Communicate findings to different stakeholder groups Design an evaluation plan for a new community intervention
Upon completion, learners will understand how process evaluation focuses on implementation fidelity while outcome evaluation measures health impact, recognizing that both are necessary for comprehensive program assessment. Learners will identify and track meaningful performance indicators aligned with program goals and select appropriate evaluation tools for collecting reliable data. Learners will analyze performance data using descriptive statistics, trend analysis, and comparative methods, and will evaluate program effectiveness by examining outcomes, costs, and equity impacts. Learners will communicate findings clearly to diverse stakeholders and will design evaluation plans that integrate goals, indicators, timelines, resources, and data analysis strategies.
Basic understanding of health program concepts and comfort with numerical data are beneficial but not required. Prior experience with data collection or program evaluation is helpful but not mandatory. Willingness to engage with quantitative and qualitative information, and openness to continuous improvement are valuable dispositions. Nursing or healthcare background is helpful but the course welcomes professionals from diverse fields engaged in population health.
