This self-paced course introduces learners to Social Determinants of Health—the non-medical factors including economic stability, education, healthcare access, neighborhood environments, and social contexts that influence health outcomes. Through interactive lessons, case-based examples, and real-world applications, learners develop the ability to identify SDOH domains, analyze population-level disparities, screen for social needs, and design interventions responsive to local data. The course emphasizes equity, person-centered care, and intersectoral coordination, equipping learners to articulate how social and structural conditions impact health across the lifespan and to act through clinical practice, community engagement, or policy advocacy.
List common SDOH factors Describe how SDOH influence health Screen for social needs in a scenario Analyze population disparities using SDOH data Evaluate an SDOH-focused initiative Create a brief to advocate for policy change Apply local SDOH data to tailor interventions
Learners will comprehend how economic stability, education, housing, transportation, and social support shape individual and population health. Learners will identify social determinants affecting their communities, screen for unmet needs using validated tools, and analyze how disparities relate to SDOH factors. Learners will develop capacity to design and evaluate interventions addressing upstream social factors and will gain advocacy skills to promote policies that reduce barriers to health.
No formal prerequisites are required. Learners benefit from basic understanding of health concepts and community contexts. Prior experience working with vulnerable or underserved populations is helpful but not necessary. Openness to examining systemic barriers to health and commitment to equity-focused approaches are valuable dispositions for this course.
