Description

This course introduces learners to the foundations of data-driven decision-making, focusing on using real-world health information to guide strategies that improve health outcomes and reduce disparities. Learners identify appropriate data sources including electronic health records, public health surveillance systems, and social determinants of health tools. The course emphasizes detecting patterns such as rising chronic disease rates or disparities in care access, interpreting data through dashboards and mapping software, and translating technical data into meaningful information for decision-makers and community partners. Content simplifies these concepts through step-by-step exercises and interactive examples relevant to population health planning.

Identify key sources of population health data Describe types of analytics in public health Use dashboard tools to explore indicators Interpret data to identify public health priorities Evaluate data quality and limitations Construct data visuals to communicate findings Apply trends to support strategic recommendations
Learners will identify reliable sources of population health data, including surveillance systems, electronic health records, and social determinants tools. Learners will analyze and interpret data trends to identify gaps in health services and improvement opportunities, and use dashboards and visualization tools to present findings clearly to stakeholders and decision-makers. Learners will apply basic data literacy skills to support program planning, evaluation, and policy advocacy aligned with strategic goals and community health needs.
Basic comfort with numbers and statistics is beneficial but not required. Learners should have familiarity with healthcare systems or community health concepts.
