This unit introduces learners to bundled payments and episode-based reimbursement, innovative payment models that consolidate multiple healthcare services into a single, fixed payment covering an entire episode of care. Learners explore how bundling pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post-procedure services promotes care coordination, efficiency, and cost control across providers. The unit contrasts episode-based models with fragmented fee-for-service (FFS) systems to highlight how bundled payments align incentives for quality and collaboration. Through federal examples such as Medicare’s Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) and the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model—as well as commercial payer programs—learners examine how financial accountability, shared savings, and risk distribution operate within bundled structures. Interactive simulations and case analyses guide learners through bundle design, contract interpretation, and gainsharing principles. The unit also introduces equity adjustments and risk mitigation strategies that ensure fair, outcome-driven reimbursement across diverse patient populations.
Define bundled payments and how they differ from FFS. Describe how episodes align services under a single payment. Explain how bundles promote care coordination and cost control. Analyze financial risk and savings distribution across providers. Evaluate strategies to reduce costs and improve outcomes in bundles.
Upon completing this unit, learners: Demonstrate understanding of the structure, purpose, and operation of bundled payment systems. Interpret and evaluate episode-based contracts and financial performance outcomes. Apply analytical reasoning to assess shared risk, cost control, and quality improvement. Identify strategies that optimize care coordination and patient outcomes within bundled arrangements. Integrate principles of equity, transparency, and accountability into bundled payment evaluation. Communicate insights that support strategic and operational decision-making in value-based care transitions.
Completion of Unit course on: Pay-for-Performance and Quality Incentives is recommended. Learners should have a foundational understanding of value-based care and incentive structures before engaging in episode-based financial modeling and risk-sharing applications.
