The unit examines key regulatory bodies such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), The Joint Commission (TJC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), among others. Additionally, the course highlights how healthcare organizations achieve and maintain compliance through policies, audits, risk management programs, and accreditation processes. By the end of the unit, learners will be able to identify the major healthcare regulatory frameworks, interpret their key requirements, and analyze how compliance influences healthcare delivery and quality outcomes.

By the end of this unit, learners will be able to: Define key terms and concepts related to healthcare regulation, compliance, and governance. Explain the purpose and scope of healthcare regulations and their impact on quality and patient safety. Identify the roles and responsibilities of major regulatory agencies such as CMS, TJC, OSHA, and HHS. Differentiate between regulatory, accreditation, and certification requirements in healthcare. Analyze how healthcare regulations influence policy, ethics, and operational standards within healthcare organizations. Apply foundational compliance principles to support organizational quality assurance and performance improvement. Evaluate the effectiveness of regulatory compliance programs in maintaining patient-centered, ethical, and safe care delivery.
Prerequisite: Completion of Module 1: Foundations of Quality Assurance, particularly Unit 1.1 (Introduction to Quality Assurance) and Unit 1.2 (Quality Assurance Frameworks). Basic understanding of healthcare quality principles, organizational structure, and continuous quality improvement (CQI) concepts. Familiarity with healthcare ethics and patient safety fundamentals (from Module 2, Unit 2.1). Rationale: This foundational course introduces learners to the regulatory and compliance landscape, requiring prior exposure to the principles of healthcare quality and safety management.
