This unit introduces learners to the structural and functional differences between the Fee-for-Service (FFS) and Managed Care reimbursement models. It examines how each model influenced provider compensation, patient access, and cost control. Learners will explore FFS as a volume-driven system rewarding service quantity, while managed care emphasizes coordinated, cost-efficient care through mechanisms like HMO, PPO, and capitation. Through simulations and comparative analyses, students observe how payment systems affect decision-making, utilization, and organizational sustainability. The unit prepares learners to interpret how these models shape financial outcomes and operational strategies in diverse healthcare settings.
Define the fee-for-service (FFS) reimbursement model and describe how payments are made. Describe the structure and payment mechanisms of managed care models (e.g., HMO, PPO, capitation). Compare the financial and operational incentives of FFS vs. managed care. Analyze the effect of each model on provider decision-making and service utilization. Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of volume-driven (FFS) systems compared to cost-controlled (capitated) systems, considering impacts on quality, access, cost, and innovation. Apply knowledge of FFS and managed care models within a simulated healthcare practice scenario to predict and analyze the resulting impact on provider revenue, patient care volume, and resource allocation. Construct a comparative analysis, supported by evidence, that aligns specific healthcare payment models (FFS, HMO, PPO, capitation) with distinct healthcare system goals (e.g., cost containment, patient choice, quality improvement, access to care).
Upon completion of this unit, learners: Demonstrate understanding of the operational differences between FFS and managed care models. Evaluate how financial incentives affect provider behavior, utilization, and patient outcomes. Differentiate between volume-driven and cost-controlled systems. Apply analytical reasoning to predict and interpret reimbursement outcomes. Communicate comparative insights that inform strategic and financial decision-making in healthcare settings.
Course on Foundations of Reimbursement Methodologies and Models is recommended. Learners should already understand the basics of reimbursement terminology, payer roles, and healthcare funding flows before advancing to payment model analysis.
