This course introduces learners to the principles and practices of healthcare auditing and compliance management, focusing on the evaluation of internal controls, processes, and adherence to regulatory requirements. The unit emphasizes how systematic auditing strengthens governance, reduces risk, and promotes accountability in healthcare organizations. Participants will learn how to design audit programs, assess compliance performance, develop corrective action plans, and monitor improvements. Real-world case studies will highlight how auditing ensures compliance with federal regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies. By the end of this unit, learners will possess the analytical skills to conduct audits effectively, identify compliance gaps, and implement quality improvement strategies that enhance transparency, efficiency, and patient safety.

Conduct compliance audits within healthcare organizations to assess adherence to CMS and JCAHO standards. Prepare healthcare organizations for regulatory reviews and audits. Identify compliance gaps and propose actionable solutions. Understand the role of documentation in regulatory compliance. Evaluate the outcomes of a compliance audit and assess areas for improvement. Relate audit results with quality improvement efforts. Apply audit findings to create a compliance action plan for a healthcare organization.

By the end of this unit, learners will be able to: Define the purpose, principles, and scope of healthcare compliance auditing. Describe the steps involved in conducting an internal or external compliance audit. Identify key performance indicators and audit metrics relevant to healthcare compliance. Apply auditing methodologies to assess regulatory adherence and policy effectiveness. Develop corrective action plans based on audit findings and root cause analysis. Interpret audit data to support decision-making and continuous quality improvement. Evaluate the role of compliance auditing in reducing risk, improving transparency, and enhancing accountability within healthcare organizations.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Units 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3. Prior learning in Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) from Module 1, Units 1.3–1.5. Understanding of risk management systems and performance indicators from Module 2. Rationale: Before conducting audits, learners must understand regulations, compliance systems, and analytical tools for identifying and correcting nonconformities in healthcare operations.
